Austcor Packaging, a privately owned family business, has been providing quality cartons and packaging solutions to Australian business since 1988. Austcor have a purpose-built corrugated manufacturing site, that spans over 15,000 square metres of production area. This facilitates the manufacture of standard corrugated cartons, to complex corrugated displays.

Austcor Packaging aims to ensure total customer satisfaction through the development, manufacture, sales and service of fibre board products and related services. This makes the efficient operation of their manufacturing plant essential.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused demand for consumer goods to skyrocket, meaning that plants must have their machines operating 24/7 to meet that demand. Austcor Packaging are a major packaging supplier to all industries, especially the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries where demand is rapidly increasing.

When CBC Wetherill Park’s Sales Representative Grahame Bartley was contacted by Austcor Packaging’s Maintenance Manager Michael Karr regarding a breakdown at their plant on a Thursday afternoon, Grahame took the call very seriously. Following site regulations during this time, Grahame went straight on to site at 3:00pm that afternoon to investigate the application of the equipment and check the failure. Upon inspection, Grahame identified a breakdown on a twin drive system, whereby both gearboxes and motors had a major failure. This was due to Austcor’s manufacturing plant running 24/7 at full capacity, due to the increased demand for packaging in the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

Grahame then sat with Michael to discuss different options and to find a suitable solution that would work best for Austcor Packaging’s manufacturing plant, as the direct replacement would have taken a month to arrive. Grahame also consulted with Mark Bonnici, Customer Service Representative at CBC Wetherill Park, to get into contact with our supplier to determine the best gearbox for Austcor Packaging’s application.

Mark went straight into action as he knew the importance of acting quickly to limit loss time to Austcor Packaging’s manufacturing plant. After cross checking with Michael, Mark had found a suitable replacement that fit the specifications of the plant by 4:00pm and requested an urgent gearbox build.

Regarding the motor breakdown, Grahame contacted two different suppliers to quickly source the correct motors as quickly as possible. Once the stock was secured on Friday, Grahame drove to the motor and gearbox suppliers to pick up and deliver to Austcor Packaging’s manufacturing plant by 1:30pm. The Austcor Maintenance Team were then able to get to work fitting the new gearboxes and motors, resulting in their operations back up and running by 5:30pm that Friday.

The CBC team understood that the breakdown would be costing Austcor $10k per hour in lost production. The quick turnaround that the CBC team executed resulted in the least possible loss to the customer. “Our prompt service and supply meant limited downtime to our customer. I am very happy we could help and provide the solution so quickly as I knew how important it was to do so,” said Grahame.

Michael agrees, “it was a very good result. In the situation we found ourselves, to be back up that quickly was as good as it gets. We have a great relationship with CBC and their reliability, price and service is always on point. Grahame is the best sales rep I have worked with so far.” Graeme had received a video of the equipment up and running again on the Friday, with a thank you message from Michael. “To receive the thank you video and a phone call was really pleasing. CBC and I do all we can to be of assistance to Austcor, we have a great working relationship that has been established now for over 15 years,” said Graeme.
