CBC Malaga’s Key Account Manager Mark Fox was due for a site visit to review the belt drive design at a mineral sands focused mining company operating an open-cut mine and ore processing facility in the infrastructure rich North Perth Basin. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this proved difficult due to tighter regulations being enforced, however Mark was adamant and worked closely with their Maintenance Manager to get the appropriate approvals to be on site.

Once on site, Mark identified several potential design issues with the belt drives of motors on site. It appeared that two pumps had different motor powers, however, were performing the same duty. The existing belt drives had excessive rim speed which can potentially be dangerous down the line, the belt detail did not match, and another belt drive would pulley clash.

The site Maintenance Manager had then informed Mark that they had a planned shutdown approaching to replace a motor, however they could not source it in time for the shutdown from other distributors. Mark then immediately got into contact with CBC’s Power Transmission Manager Brad Bickford regarding the need for a motor replacement and alerted him of the impending deadline for the shutdown. Brad worked diligently and was able to source an identical motor that was suited to the mining specifications of the mine site.

Due to the distribution network and availability of stock that CBC has across Australia, the motor was quickly sourced and ready to be delivered to the site in time for the scheduled shutdown. Mark then clarified the data and duty of the motor and offered belt drive designs within the recommended design parameters.

This resulted in no loss of production for the mine and ore processing site as the planned shutdown could take place and they were provided with the correct parts and solutions for their site. The Maintenance Manager was thankful to the CBC team for going above and beyond to ensure the site did not experience a loss of production, as he said, “thanks to the CBC team and their quick actions and ability to find an identical motor, we suffered no loss to our business as the motor was replaced in our planned shutdown.”
